Fermoy Rowing Club Awards Ceremony honours the Outstanding Determination and Successes of their Junior Members during the 2010/11 Season.

Fermoy Rowing Club kickstarted the new season with a Barbeque and Awards Ceremony, to mark the outstanding achievements of their members in the 2010-2011 Season.   The  rowing year brought 47 wins to the club, making it their most succcessful season since the 1980s..

During a very enjoyable evening, several individuals' received awards recognising their success and outstanding contribution to the club during the year.  The recipients of this year’s award for 'Male Junior Oars Person',   went to two individuals, twins from Kilworth and pupils at Colaiste An Chraobhín, Ruari and Luke Myers.  In the words of Pa Granville, Chairman “ This year’s award could have been given to many of our Junior Males, all of whom displayed a level of determination & commitment which made this a successful year for many of our crews at many regatta’s . But Ruari and Luke always maintained, a key value of Fermoy Rowing   Club, the determination to be the best that they could and the award for best Male Oarsperson/s was made in recognition of their unfailing commitment to, and belief, in their crew and the Club”.

The next award was for 'Female Junior Oarsperson of the Year' and went to Hillary Shinnick. A native of Kildorrery and pupil of Loreto Secondary School, since a very young age, has excelled at every category of rowing that she has participated in. While competing in both Sculls & Quad, as a Junior 14/15 and 16 Sculler, she has been almost undefeated to date.   Pa Granville remarked   “She has brought a level of commitment and dedication to her rowing which has been envied and admired by all of her fellow oarspeople, at the club and in Ireland. She has achieved success in what has been described as the ‘loneliest of all sports – Single Sculls’ and even at her very young age, is a fantastic role model for all of her club colleagues.”

Hillary, was also awarded this year’s 'Overall Oarsperson of the Year' in recognition of her outstanding achievements at both National and International levels.   Her successes in both the Junior 16 and Junior 18 category’s at many of the regatta’s throughout the year culminated in her winning both the Junior 16 and Junior 18 Individual Sculling Championships at the National Rowing Centre in July. At the National trials, her outstanding ability was quickly identified, with Mr Nathan Adams', Rowing Ireland’s High Performance Coach, confirming ’that she is something special’! As a result of her many successes throughout the year, she was selected to represent Ireland at the Munich Regatta as part of the Womens’ Quad.
As well as this, she brought further International honours to the Club by being selected to compete in the European Championships..the Coupe de la Jeunesse in Austria, where she was part of the Womens’ Quad which brought back a bronze medal…the first Oarsperson from Fermoy Rowing Club to bring home such a medal .   Stephen Donnellan, Captain of Fermoy Rowing Club summed up the feelings of the Members, Committee and Officers when he said   “She has started out on a path in Rowing, which has already and hopefully will bring more International recognition and success…we are incredibly proud of her.”

Two other awards on the night were made in recognition of   the work of two individuals whose dedication to the club have made this years successes possible.    Katie O’Neill of Watergrasshill, was awarded 'Club Administration Person of the Year' for her contribution to making the  teenage disco's a resounding success.   The disco's, which due to popular demand and Katie's dedication and organisational abilities in collaboration with Marianne Harris, Treasurer have become a monthly fixture and a major source of revenue for the Club.   Pa  Granville reitterated the importance of funding when he declared “The success of a club is based on many things, for the most part, it is down to our Oarspeople, having a much envied clubhouse in which to train as well as having a fleet of boats, to which we hope to add to very soon, but which is already the envy of many,  all of this requires support from an administrative perspective and central to this is funding.”

The second award in this category,  ' Overall Club Person Of the Year' went to Eolann Sheehan. A native of Fermoy and a pupil at   St. Colmans College, though he did not spend much time on the water in 2011 in a rowing capacity, Eolann probably spent more time than anyone else on the water…in both a coaching and supportive role. Eolann received ‘The Doc’ Trophy” named after Dr Walter McGuire, one of the club’s most successful coaches and an individual who is credited with turning around the fortunes of Fermoy Rowing Club.  Pa Granville acknowledged Eolann’s outstanding contribution when he said “This award is given to someone who has demonstrated many of the values of Fermoy Rowing Club, including a willingness to work tirelessly for the benefit of the club,   never refusing when it came to helping the club in any task asked of him again and again.   He has been involved in every activity held in the club throughout the year, is always one of the first to volunteer for whatever needs to be done and always gives his all to ensure that the task, whatever the nature, is completed to the highest standards.”

The night was rounded off with a barbeque in the early Autumn air and the families, friends and Officers of Fermoy Rowing Club all made plans for the new season ahead. Kicking off with resumption of training on the 3rd September. The usual busy itinerary of land and river training will follow, with heads of the river Competitions before the Regatta season commences again in April for the forthcoming season. Congradulations to all oarspeople of Fermoy Rowing Club.
